L. Fried, RDH, M.S., Associate Professor, Director of Interprofessional
Initiatives and a Dean’s Faculty member at the University of Maryland School of
Dentistry (UMSOD), was awarded a Governor’s Citation from Maryland Gov. Larry
J. Hogan in June. The citation was presented in honor of Ms. Fried’s more than 40
years of educating, advocating and promoting the profession of dental hygiene
and access to oral health care, and in appreciation of her significant
contributions to UMSOD throughout her distinguished career.
In 2015, she made the Maryland Daily Record’s “Top 100 Women” list. Ms.
Fried is renowned for her pioneering research and publications addressing the
dental hygienist’s role in tobacco cessation and prevention. Her speaking
engagements, research and publications focus on the dental hygienist’s role in
practice, teaching and research; preventing and stemming the use of addictive
nicotine products; and preventing HPV and head and neck cancers.
A prolific speaker who addresses health
professional groups nationally and internationally, she also was awarded the American Dental
Hygienist Associations’ Warner Lambert Award for Excellence in Dental Hygiene
in 1997 and its Irene Newman Award in 2016 for advancing the art and science of
the profession. Ms. Fried is a graduate of The Ohio State University and earned
an M.S. in Dental Hygiene from Old Dominion University Gene W. Hirschfeld School Of Dental Hygiene, who named here Alumni of the Year in 2011.
