UMMC PhotoThe University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry (UMMC) Dental Hygiene Department hosted high school students from Lanier High School in the second “Shooting For Smiles” event in October 2017. Dental hygiene students provided screenings, prophys, and fluoride varnish, and created a mouth guard for each member of the Lady Bulldogs basketball team. Thirty high school basketball players attended the event. The impetus for organizing the event for the girls’ basketball team came after Elizabeth Carr, RDH, DHA, Associate Professor of Dental Hygiene, learned that the girls’ team didn’t have funding to provide mouth guards.

The dental hygiene students had an additional intent—to recruit future dental hygienists into the profession. “Not only did this clinic day allow for the dental hygiene students to provide a much-needed service for these students, but also the event provided our students with opportunities to tell their stories on how they decided on dental hygiene as a career. Hopefully they can inspire a high school student towards a career in dental hygiene,” says Prof. Carr, organizer of the event.
