A student considering attending the
Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC (OSD USC)
has more study options than ever before as the Southern California dental school adds two new online courses to its roster (several more are in development) and two new advanced specialty certificate programs.
OSD USC is taking its dental instruction into cyberspace. The two current programs—an
online master’s degree (or certificate program) in geriatric dentistry and an
online master’s degree in orofacial pain and oral medicine—are geared toward working professionals who can log in at night and on weekends to propel their careers forward in exciting ways.
The 37-month programs use a hybrid online and in-person educational model, with 90% of instruction occurring online. Over the summer, residents participate in a series of intensive two-week boot camps, during which they are trained and assessed in a variety of skills.
in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
In 2013, OSD USC created the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Led by Mark Urata, M.D., D.D.S., board certified in both oral and maxillofacial and plastic surgery and chair of both divisions, the program forges a paradigm-shifting alliance between oral and maxillofacial surgery and plastic surgery.
Prospective residents seeking to pursue the
oral and maxillofacial surgery program have two options when applying. They can select a 48-month course of study, which, once completed, will award them a certificate in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Or, they can select a 72-month option, which gives its graduates both an oral and maxillofacial surgery
certificate and an M.D. through a unique partnership with the Keck School of Medicine of USC.
and Adhesive Dentistry
Advanced Operative and Adhesive Dentistry Program is one of a few advanced programs—and the only on the west coast at this time—focused on operative dentistry. In the program, residents gain extensive clinical experience in esthetic and digital dentistry, with a special emphasis on CAD/CAM, to restore healthy form,
esthetics and function using the most advanced minimally invasive approaches. Biomaterials research is an integral part of the program, with students gaining the opportunity to learn the science of dental materials. The 26-month program leads graduates to a certificate in advanced operative and adhesive dentistry,
with an option to also pursue, concurrently, an M.S. in craniofacial biology.
OSD USC has shaped bright, talented students into outstanding dentists and dental hygienists since 1897. The school’s challenging clinical education and expert faculty members provide future dental professionals with the skills necessary to become the best in their fields.
