Lily T. Garcia, D.D.S., M.S., was installed as the new Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors, and the ADEA House of Delegates elected Huw F. Thomas, B.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., as Chair-elect of the Board. Drs. Garcia and Thomas, as well as four other new Board Members, took office March 18 at the end of the closing session of the ADEA House of Delegates during the 2014 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Antonio, TX.
Dr. Garcia will serve as Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors through the 2015 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition March 7-10 in Boston, MA. She had previously served as Chair-elect of the Board. Dr. Thomas, Dean of the School of Dental Medicine and Professor of Pediatric Dentistry at Tufts University, replaces Dr. Garcia in her role as Chair-elect of the Board.
The four new members include:
David M. Shafer, D.M.D., Associate Professor and Chair, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, University of Connecticut School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Shafer also serves in local, national and international organizations related to dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery, research and education. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Fellow of the International Team for Oral Implantology.
Joan E. Kowolik, B.D.S., LDS, RCS Edin., Associate Professor and Director of Predoctoral Pediatric Dentistry at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, is the 2014–15 Board Director for Sections. Dr. Kowolik joined the IU School of Dentistry dental faculty in 1998, accepting a full-time position in 2002 as the Director of Pre-doctoral Pediatric Dentistry. Dr. Kowolik, a dental graduate of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, has been involved in ADEA leadership roles for more than a decade, beginning with a fellowship in ADEA's Leadership Institute and then as the ADEA/Sunstar Americas, Inc./Harry W. Bruce, Jr. Legislative Fellow.
Alexander Brao is the 2014–15 Board Director for Students, Residents and Fellows. Mr. Brao, a native of Naples, FL, graduated from the University of Florida in 2009 with bachelor’s degree in Food Science and Human Nutrition. He is a third year dental student at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). Mr. Brao also spent two years representing the ADEA Council of Students Residents and Fellows on the Annual Session Planning Committee. Mr. Brao plans to pursue his dental training by attending a Prosthodontics residency program.
Cecile Feldman, D.D.S., M.B.A., Professor and Dean, Rutgers School of Dental Medicine, is the 2014–15 Board Director for Deans. Dr. Feldman has served as the Dean at Rutgers (formerly UMDNJ-The New Jersey Dental School) since 2001. She has served in numerous leadership roles including the NIH Council of Councils, the Commission on Dental Accreditation and the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education.
