The University of Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has recently grown its relationships with dental schools around the world. In June, five representatives traveled to China to meet with dental education leaders at two schools. The visits focused on discussions of trends and best practices in dental education.
Participating in the week-long trip were Dr. Patrick J. Ferrillo, Jr., Interim Provost for University of the Pacific; Interim Dean Nader Nadershahi; Dr. Anders Nattestad, Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the school's Director of Global Initiatives; Mr. Gary Mitchell, President of the Pacific Dugoni Foundation; and Dr. Colin Wong, a graduate, member of the foundation board, and former President of the school's Alumni Association.
The visit included meetings with students, faculty, and administrators at the Guanghua School of Stomatology at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou. Dr. Ferrillo and Dr. Nattestad also gave a guest lecture at the school, as Dr. Ferrillo was named as a visiting professor earlier in 2010.
Additionally, the group spent time at the School & Hospital of Stomatology at Wenzhou Medical College in Wenzhou. Here the Dugoni School and Wenzhou signed a collaborative agreement to work together to create a student/faculty exchange initiative between the two institutions.
This trip coincides with the Dugoni School of Dentistry's support of the improvement of global dental education through the International Federation of Dental Educators and Association (IFDEA). In January 2010, Dr. Nattestad assumed the role of IFDEA Executive Director. While in China, the team presented a certificate to Dean Ling Jun-qi of Guanghua School of Stomatology to recognize her selection as a member of the IFDEA Board of Directors. The group also conducted an IFDEA board meeting with colleagues in other parts of the globe.
