Three Appointments at University of Detroit Mercy

University of Detroit Mercy (UDM) School of Dentistry Dean Mert N. Aksu has announced three new faculty appointments. Dr. Robert M. Trombly is UDM's new Associate Dean of Academic Administration, Dr. Deidre D. Young is the new Director of Multicultural Affairs, and Dr. Zenon P. Kossak is the new Chair of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Dr. Trombly served previously as Executive Associate Dean at Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine in Pomona. He earned his D.D.S. from University of Michigan and a J.D. from University of Denver. In addition to his leadership experience, Dr. Trombly recently had the unique opportunity to create a new dental program at Western University. "I am confident that Dr. Trombly's experience in curriculum review, administrative leadership, as well as his education and training will only further enhance the School of Dentistry," said Dr. Aksu.

Dr. Young joins the School of Dentistry from Wayne County Community College where she teaches chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology, as well as microbiology. She also practices as a general dentist in the city of Detroit. Dr. Young earned her D.D.S. at University of Michigan School of Dentistry. Dr. Aksu remarked that Dr. Young's "education, background, and commitment to community will be an asset to the School of Dentistry." Dr. Young will also hold a full-time faculty position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Patient Management.

Dr. Kossak joins UDM from the Macomb-Riverview Hospital Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program, where he teaches. He is also the founder of Summit Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, which has four locations in the Detroit metropolitan area. Dr. Kossak earned his D.D.S. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry and completed a four-year residency training program in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Fordham-Misericordia Hospitals, a system affiliated with New York University. He has lectured on TMJ surgery, implantology, and oral cancer surgery both locally and nationally. In addition to his involvement in several medical and dental societies, Dr. Kossak is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, and an Associate of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery. "Dr. Kossak's education, training, and extensive experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery will be an asset to the School of Dentistry," commented Dr. Aksu.

Tufts University Appoints New Chair of Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry

Dr. Hans-Peter WeberDr. Hans-Peter Weber has been appointed Professor and Chair of Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.

Dr. Weber received his D.M.D. from Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He received a dental degree, a certificate in removable prosthodontics, and a certificate in periodontics and fixed prosthodontics in 1984 from the University of Berne in his native Switzerland. Dr. Weber is an active member with a number of professional organizations and holds leadership positions in the Academy of Prosthodontics and the International Team of Implantology. He received an Honorary Membership in the American College of Prosthodontists in 2002.

Before his appointment at Tufts, Dr. Weber was the Raymond J. and Elva Pomfret Nagle Professor of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences and Chair of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Biomaterials Sciences at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He has over 100 publications and 12 textbook chapters to his credit, serves on the review boards of several dental journals, and is co-editor of Clinical Oral Implants Research.
