Dr. John N. Williams Named Dean at Indiana University

John WilliamsUniversity of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) School of Dentistry Dean John N. Williams, Jr. has been selected as Dean of the Indiana University (IU) School of Dentistry. He will be succeeding the retiring Dean, Lawrence I. Goldblatt, on June 15, 2010, pending approval by the Trustees of Indiana University.

Dr. Williams was previously Dean of the University of Louisville School of Dentistry from 1999 to 2005 before serving as Dean at UNC. "Dr. Williams has a strong track record. He has played an important role in enhancing and maintaining the top-notch reputation of the UNC School of Dentistry. This combination of talents and experiences will serve the IU School of Dentistry well both now and in the future," said Dr. Uday Sukhatme, Executive Vice Chancellor and Dean of Faculties at IU. "Under his leadership the School of Dentistry will continue to make a positive impact on student success and dentistry as a practice."

Dr. Williams said his priorities include increasing the school's research productivity and funding, creating and implementing a plan for new and improved facilities, and increasing fundraising outcomes for the school. "I am honored to serve as the school's next Dean and look forward to working not only to enhance the dental school but to broaden the impact of IU within the state of Indiana and beyond," Dr. Williams said in accepting the appointment.

Dr. Williams is currently the ADEA Vice President for Deans and an active consultant and site visit chair for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). He has received numerous awards and was named as the American Student Dental Association UNC Chapter's Faculty of the Year in 2006, 2007, and 2009. Dr. Williams has published numerous papers, abstracts, and book chapters on a wide variety of subjects, including community dentistry, dental education policy, and information technology.

Dr. Sally Marshall Named Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost at UCSF

MarshallUniversity of California, San Francisco (UCSF) School of Dentistry's Dr. Sally J. Marshall was named as Interim Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost, effective January 1, 2010. Dr. Marshall is a Professor at UCSF School of Dentistry's Department of Preventive and Restorative Dental Sciences and will fill the position being vacated by Dr. A. Eugene Washington.

"Dr. Marshall has been on the UCSF faculty for 22 years and has been highly successful as UCSF's Vice Provost for Academic Affairs," said UCSF Chancellor Sue Desmond-Hellmann. During her time as Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, a position she was appointed to in 2005, Dr. Marshall has been responsible for all academic personnel actions, including appointments, promotions, and merit increases. She has also created and implemented programs to enhance faculty life, directed the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement, and headed the Chancellor's' Council on Faculty Life.

During her career with UCSF, Dr. Marshall has chaired the Academic Senate Committee on Academic Personnel and the Academic Senate Committee on Research. She has also participated in leadership roles on other UCSF committees, including the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Academic Diversity, which worked to create a more diverse campus community and implement other recommendations in the university's 10-point diversity initiative.
