Dr. Buchanan Named Interim Dean
Dr. Judith A. Buchanan, a Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry, has been appointed Interim Dean of the school. Dr. Buchanan, who was recruited to Minnesota from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where she was Academic Dean from 1997 to 2005, is an expert in dental accreditation and virtual technology and curricula. She received a doctorate in biochemistry from the University of Texas. She received her D.M.D. from the University of Florida College of Dentistry and pursued teaching and research at the University of Mississippi and the University of Illinois.
She served for 22 years in the military (in the National Guard and U.S. Army Reserves) and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the National Guard. In 2003, she was deployed to run dental clinics in Bosnia and Germany, and in 2005 she joined the University of Minnesota faculty as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.
Dr. Palenik Named OSAP Inaugural Director of Research and Scientific Affairs
The Organization for Safety, Asepsis and Prevention (OSAP) recently named Dr. Charles John Palenik its inaugural Director of Research and Scientific Affairs.
In this role, Dr. Palenik will oversee the activities of the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee (RSAC) and is charged with advancing organizational and individual research efforts concerning infection prevention and human health and safety, continual improvement of the scientific content of the Annual Symposium, formal review of study results, and other responsibilities designed to educate and prepare the next generation of preventionists.
Dr. Palenik is a former OSAP Chairman and a past winner of OSAP's research award. He also received the organization’s Dr. Milton E. Schaefer Award for Superior Service.
He recently retired from Indiana University School of Dentistry where he was Professor of Oral Microbiology, Director of Infection Control Research and Services, and Director of Human Health and Safety. He earned an M.B.A. in Healthcare Facility Management at Regis University, a Ph.D. in Behavioral Sciences/Dental Health Promotions at University of Wales School of Health Education, a doctorate in Instruction Systems Technology at Indiana University School of Education, and a master’s degree in Microbiology & Immunology at Indiana University School of Medicine.
Dr. Palenik has served on the boards of various professional organizations, including the American Association for Dental Research, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the American Association for Dental Research, the Dental Assisting National Board, and the International Association for Dental Research.
Dr. Sohn Named Director of Division of Dental Public Health at Boston University
Dr. Woosung Sohn has been named the Director of the Division of Dental Public Health and Program Director of the Advanced Education Program in Dental Public Health at Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Sohn joined the faculty as Associate Professor of Health Policy and Health Services Research on August 1, 2011.
Dr. Sohn is a graduate of Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea, and of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, where he received his Dr.P.H. He came to Boston from the University of Michigan, where he held a joint faculty appointment as Associate Professor at the School of Dentistry and Director of the Dental Public Health Program in the Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health.
He has attained national and international recognition as a leading scholar in oral epidemiology and health services research, with particular interests in oral health disparities research. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Public Health and was a Fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute in 2009-10. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Public Health Dentistry and a member of the Advisory Board of Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology. In 2009, he was honored by the International Association for Dental Research with its Aubrey Sheiham Award for Distinguished Research in Dental Public Health Sciences.
