Dr. Denton A. Cooley, a world-famous heart surgeon and founder and President Emeritus of the Texas Heart Institute at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, made a large gift to the University of Texas at Houston (UTHealth) School of Dentistry in memory of his father, the late Dr. Ralph C. Cooley. Dr. Cooley was a 1908 alumnus of the school.
It is the largest single gift ever made to the school, and it established the Ralph C. Cooley, D.D.S. Distinguished Professorship in Biomaterials. A large multipurpose center currently under construction adjacent to the new dental school building will be named the “Denton A. Cooley, M.D. and Ralph C. Cooley, D.D.S. Faculty Life Center.”
Dean John A. Valenza said that Dr. Cooley’s gift will perpetuate the legacy of his father, an innovator who inspired others to continue the advancement of dentistry. The endowed professorship will be used to help recruit and support the work of a biomaterials clinician and scientist. The new multipurpose facility is expected to open in 2012 and will host professional conferences, meetings, and other events.
More details about the gift to UTHealth can be found in the Houston Chronicle.
