The John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC) is the National Institutes of Health (NIH) entity focused on global health research. Through its various programs, the FIC provides opportunities for investigators worldwide to engage in research related to global health.
Prior to 2006, FIC fellowships were reserved for medical residents and fellows. Now qualified dental students may participate in the International Clinical Research Scholars and Fellows (FICRS-F) Program, which offers a one-year clinical research training experience. The April 2011 issue of the NIDCR electronic newsletter highlights Ms. Leora Walter of Columbia University College of Dental Medicine, who spent a year in Peru studying the effects of HPV on oral health.
