Dr. Patrick Lloyd Named New Dean of OSU
Patrick M. Lloyd, D.D.S., has been named as the new Dean of The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Dentistry. Dr. Lloyd is currently Dean of University of Minnesota School of Dentistry; he will begin his new position at OSU on August 1, 2011.
Since his appointment as Dean in 2004, Dr. Lloyd has led changes and improvements for the School of Dentistry at the University of Minnesota including establishing a new hospital-based general practice residency in dentistry, using simulation technology, and the building and opening of a new student commons. In addition, he initiated a promotion process for clinical/research track faculty and advocated support for the school’s robust research in virology, biomaterials, pain, bone biology, and the relationship between oral health and systemic health. Further, Dr. Lloyd developed local partnerships to promote and finance community-based dental education.
Dr. Lloyd is a 2004 alumnus of the ADEA Leadership Institute who was recognized in 2008 with an ADEA Presidential Citation. He has represented ADEA on the American Dental Association’s Council on Dental Education and Licensure. He is currently a reviewer for the Journal of Dental Education and a member of the ADEA Council of Deans.
Dr. Lloyd is also a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists, a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics, and a Fellow, Clinical Medicine Section, Gerontological Society of America. He previously served as Co-President of the International College of Prosthodontists. From 1998 to 2003 he also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Prosthodontics.
He received both his D.D.S. and M.S. in prosthodontics from Marquette University.
Dr. Boyle Appointed as Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at SIU
Ann M. Boyle, D.M.D., M.A., Dean of Southern Illinois University (SIU) School of Dental Medicine, has been appointed Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. Her duties will begin on June 6, 2011, and remain until the university completes a national search for the permanent position. During that time, current Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Dr. Bruce E. Rotter will serve as Interim Dental Dean.
Dr. Boyle serves as a Liaison to the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI).
Dr. Boyle joined SIU in 1995 as Associate Dean in the School of Dental Medicine and has served as Dean since 2002. She received both her M.A. in Educational Psychology and her D.M.D. at Fairleigh Dickinson University and has completed the Management Development Program at Harvard University.
Dr. Laura Neumann to Retire
Laura M. Neumann, D.D.S., M.P.H., has announced she will retire this summer from her position as American Dental Association (ADA) Senior Vice President for Education and Professional Affairs. Her staff responsibilities within the ADA included the Commission on Dental Accreditation; the Council on Dental Education and Licensure (including the Continuing Education Recognition Program or CERP); career guidance activities; policy issues related to education, licensure, and special areas of dentistry; the Center for Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning; the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations; the Department of Testing Services; and the ADA Library.
Dr. Neumann is a member of the ADEA Commission on Change and Innovation in Dental Education (ADEA CCI) Oversight Committee and was honored with an ADEA Presidential Citation in 2010.
Dr. John Valenza Named Dean of University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch
John A. Valenza, D.D.S., has been named Dean of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Dental Branch, effective June 1, 2011. Dr. Valenza had served as Interim Dean since 2009.
A 1981 graduate of the Dental Branch, Dr. Valenza is the first alumnus to serve as Dean in the school’s 106-year history. He joined the faculty in 1987 after completing a residency in Tennessee, where he practiced full time and also served on the faculty of Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry.
At the Dental Branch, Dr. Valenza initiated the General Practice Residency program with Memorial Hermann Hospital, and he has held a number of leadership positions, including Director of Advanced Education, Associate Dean for Patient Care, and Executive Associate Dean. He has been involved in the design and construction of a new, state-of-the-art dental school building and Faculty Life Center. Both are scheduled to open in mid-2012.
Recently, Dr. Valenza led a successful drive to change the name of the school from “Dental Branch” to “School of Dentistry,” also effective June 1.
Dr. Valenza is a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry, the American College of Dentists, and the International College of Dentists.
Dr. Timothy DeRouen Named Interim Dean at University of Washington Dental School
Timothy A. DeRouen, M.S., Ph.D., will serve as Interim Dean of the University of Washington School of Dentistry during the search for Dr. Martha Somerman’s successor as Dean. Dr. DeRouen currently is Executive Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs. He was also a member of the Journal of Dental Education Editorial Review Board from 2004 to 2007.
Dr. Michael Reddy Named Interim Dean of University of Alabama at Birmingham Dental School
Michael S. Reddy, D.M.D., D.M.Sc., has been named Interim Dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Dentistry, follow Dr. Huw F. Thomas’s appointment as Dean of the Tufts University School of Dental Medicine.
Dr. Reddy, Chair of the Department of Periodontics since 2004 and former Assistant Dean for Planning and Clinical Activity, is a graduate of the Harvard School of Dental Medicine who joined the UAB faculty in 1989. He is a 2000 alumnus of the ADEA Leadership Institute.
Dr. Reddy has had continuous NIH funding for the past 20 years and more than 40 grants awarded as an investigator or co-investigator. He has served on the editorial boards of the Journal of Dental Education, Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Dental Research, and Journal of the American Dental Association and is co-editor of Clinical Applications in Periodontics. He also is a senior scientist in multiple UAB research centers, including the Center for Metabolic Bone Disease and the Center for Aging.
