Dr. James Koelbl Named Dean at UNE

The University of New England (UNE) College of Dental Medicine announced the appointment of Dr. James J. Koelbl as the college's new Dean. Dr. Koelbl is the Founding Dean of Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine and will join UNE in April. The college is slated to open in fall 2012.

Prior to his current position at Western University, Dr. Koelbl served as Dean of West Virginia University School of Dentistry (1999-2007) and held several senior positions within the American Dental Association (ADA) from 1994 to 1999. He has also served as Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry and held several faculty and administrative positions at Loyola University School of Dentistry. Dr. Koelbl received his D.D.S. from the University of Illinois College of Dentistry, his M.J. in health law from Loyola University School of Law, and an M.S. in Oral Biology from Loyola University.

"I am very pleased that Dr. Koelbl is joining us at the University of New England," said UNE President Danielle N. Ripich. "UNE will benefit greatly from his extensive experience in dental medicine and as the dean of two dental schools. I am confident Dr. Koelbl will enable UNE to expedite the accreditation of the College of Dental Medicine and will also greatly assist in our fundraising efforts for the college."

Dean Carole Anderson to Retire in 2011

Dean Carole A. Anderson of The Ohio State University (OSU) College of Dentistry has announced her intention to step down from deanship and retire in June 2011. Dr. Anderson has served as Dean since February 2009 and was Interim Dean between 2006 and 2009.

Prior to joining the OSU faculty in 1986, she served as Associate Dean at University of Rochester School of Nursing, and she was a faculty member and division chair at the University of Colorado School of Nursing. She received her M.S. in psychiatric nursing and a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado.

Dean Anderson is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and the past editor of the academy's official journal, Nursing Outlook. She was a charter member and two-term chair of the Scientific Review Group of the National Institute of Nursing Research, and she has worked with several national policymaking organizations, including the National Advisory Committee on Nurse Education and Practice. Dean Anderson currently serves on the National Advisory Council of the National Institutes of Health's National Institute for Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR).

Throughout her distinguished career as a professor and administrator in the health sciences at OSU, Dean Anderson has managed the restructuring of multimillion dollar budgets and affected university-wide policies in myriad ways, including her service as the co-chair of the University's Council on Diversity.

ADAA Journal Editorial Director Anna Nelson Dies

Prof. Anna Nelson; photo courtesy ADAAProf. Anna Nelson, a pioneering member of the American Dental Assistants Association (ADAA), died at her home in San Francisco, California. Prof. Nelson was the 2000-01 National President of the ADAA and was serving as the Editorial Director for the Dental Assistant journal, ADAA's official publication. Until last fall, Prof. Nelson was Program Director for dental assisting at the City Colleges of San Francisco.

A Life Member of the ADAA, Prof. Nelson held every office in the ADAA's local, state, and national components. Recipient of numerous awards and citations, she received the first Kay Mosley Award, presented by the ADAA Foundation in recognition of achievements on behalf of the profession, the ADAA, and the Foundation. She was also serving as Secretary of the ADAA Foundation at the time of her death.

She was currently a Commissioner of the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) and chaired CODA's Dental Assistant Review Committee (DA RC). She was a member of Colgate Oral Systemic Advisory Board and active with the California Association of Dental Assisting Teachers.
