Dr. Sarrett Named New Dean of VCU
Dr. David C. Sarrett has been appointed as the new Dean of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry. He has been serving as the school's Interim Dean since early 2010 and is currently an Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Dental Association. Dr. Sarrett will continue to serve as the Associate Vice President for Health Sciences at VCU until a search is completed for his replacement.
Dr. Sarrett received his D.M.D. from University of Florida (UF) College of Dentistry and served on the school's faculty from 1978 to 1993. In 1988, he completed his M.S. in Materials Science and Engineering at UF. During his time on staff, he was also actively involved in research in the Specialized Materials Science Research Center in the Department of Dental Biomaterials.
In 1993, Dr. Sarrett accepted the position of Chair, Department of General Practice Dentistry, at VCU, and he was appointed Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs in 2000. In 2003, he was appointed to his current position as Associate Vice President for Health Sciences for the VCU Medical Center and in 2008, was named President of the VCU Dental Faculty Practice Association. Dr. Sarrett also served as a member of the American Dental Association (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs from 2001 to 2005 and is the inaugural editor for the ADA Professional Product Review.
Dr. Janet Southerland Named Dean of Meharry Medical College
Dr. Janet H. Southerland has been named Dean of the Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry. Meharry is currently the largest private historically black institution in the United States solely dedicated to educating health care professionals and scientists.
Dr. Southerland earned her D.D.S. degree from the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in 1989, where she also received her M.P.H. and Ph.D. Prior to her new appointment, Dr. Southerland served as Chair, Department of Hospital Dentistry, at UNC and Chief of the Oral Medicine Service at UNC Hospitals.
