HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson has announced the awarding of 63 grants totaling $9.8 million to reimburse dental education programs for some of the costs of providing oral health services for Americans living with HIV/AIDS. The grants are awarded to eligible dental schools, postdoctoral dental education programs, and dental hygiene education programs. Grant recipients provide a full range of oral health services, including diagnostic and preventive care, oral health education, oral medicine, oral surgery, and comprehensive restorative care.

The awards are made under the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, which is administered by HHS’s Health Resources and Services Administration through its HIV/AIDS Bureau. Since the CARE Act was first funded in fiscal year 1991, nearly $10 billion has been awarded in grants to provide needed health care and associated services for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The main objectives of the program are to support increased access to oral health care for people living with HIV/AIDS and to support the education and training of students and residents in accredited dental and dental hygiene programs while providing care, under the direction of dentists.

ADEA led the advocacy efforts to secure funding for the Dental Reimbursement Program.
