Manitoba Health Supports Collaborative Oral Systemic Health Curriculum

Manitoba Health announced $500,000 in funding (over five years) to the faculties of Medicine and Dentistry toward development of a groundbreaking online curriculum to educate nondental health care providers about oral health. Diseases and conditions of the oral cavity can have a profound and pervasive impact on overall health, especially in high-risk populations where access to dental care may be limited.

Pacific Center for Special Care Awarded $2.1 Million State Oral Health Workforce Grant

The Pacific Center for Special Care at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry recently received a $2.1 million grant from the California Department of Public Health for a Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA)-funded state oral health workforce project. This is the second of two such HRSA grants awarded to the Pacific Center for Special Care for a total funding of $4 million.

University of Florida Opens New Dental Clinical Research Unit

The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), in partnership with the Health Resources and Services Administration, announces a call for submissions for instructional resources to support an oral health in medicine model curriculum, disseminated through MedEdPORTAL, the association’s publication repository for peer-reviewed open-access educational resources.

Delta Dental to Fund New Simulation Center at Meharry Medical College

Delta Dental of Tennessee donated $770,000 towards a new dental simulation center at Meharry Medical College. The new center plans to use a multimedia teaching system that incorporates manikins with computer simulators to provide a reality-based experience. This training will shorten the learning curve for students and allow for a smoother transition from training to patient care.

Periodontology Module Expands the ADEA Curriculum Resource Center

The ADEA Curriculum Resource Center (ADEA CRC) continues to grow. A curriculum module on periodontology was added to website’s three existing modules: dental plaque biofilm, dentin hypersensitivity, and erosion.

A new pilot project at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry has brought iPads into the school's main clinic. Students are using iPads equipped with a special application that gives them a new way to communicate with patients, discuss oral health topics and dental procedures, and educate patients about the health of their mouths.

ADEA Members Can Again Participate Remotely in ADA Education in the Round

Once again, in October 2011 dental faculty, students, residents, and fellows will access Education in the Round from the American Dental Association (ADA) Annual Session in Las Vegas online and at no cost. This unique educational opportunity for ADEA members is created in partnership with the ADA and sponsored by Philips Sonicare. Online access information will be distributed to deans and program directors of academic dental institutions in September 2011.
