Shortly after he graduated from high school, Michael Layton embarked on a two-year journey to Romania and Moldova as a Latter Day Saints Missionary, an experience that turned out to play a huge role in molding his future. While in Romania, Mr. Layton learned the language, which helped him interact effectively with and understand the challenges faced by Romanians. It was this that helped him develop, he says, a “desire to care for the poor and underserved."

In March 2003, the Council of Students elected Dr. Arena to his first term as COS Vice President. He is currently serving his third and final term. By including the Vice President for Students on its Board of Directors, ADEA ensures that students have a voice at the table when all key decisions for the Association are made.

Many assumptions fill dental schools. Faculty believe the administration will attract motivated new students, willing to learn. Students expect outstanding facilities in which to learn. Students look for guidance from numerous engaging faculty members. Unfortunately, during my last three years of dental school, I have seen the last assumption modified.

ADEA and AADR Launch Innovative Faculty Recruitment Program for Students

With the dental school faculty shortage expected to grow in the future, the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the American Association of Dental Research (AADR) have joined forces to launch an innovative faculty recruitment program that will encourage and prepare students to enter academic dentistry. Designed to reach students attending all U.S. and Canadian dental schools, the new Academic Dental Careers Fellowship Program is being established with $100,000 in support from the American Dental Association Foundation (ADAF), the charitable arm of the American Dental Association.

The National Dental Association Foundation (NDAF), in collaboration with the Colgate-Palmolive Company, sponsored the ninth Annual Faculty Recognition Awards Luncheon and Minority Faculty and Administrators’ Forum at the 92nd Annual National Dental Association Convention, July 29, 2005, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Allied Dental Program Directors Meeting

This year’s theme for the meeting focused on change in allied dental education. Dr. Marc Frankel and Ms. Judith Schectman facilitated an all-day workshop that addressed changes facing professionals in academic health disciplines identified from a preconference survey and industry trends. Directors were able to determine their individual style during times of change and were able to apply this information to a case study in team dynamics and leadership.
