An Update on the ADEA/FADEA Project

The changes announced in 2009 in the reporting of National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) scores (becoming pass/fail in 2012) placed a focus on the postdoctoral admissions process. Advanced education program directors will face new challenges in the always-critical process of screening applicants and selecting the best candidates for their programs.

ADEA/FADEA: Working Together to Improve the Selection Process

The ADEA Future of Advanced Dental Education Admissions (ADEA/FADEA) Project focuses on offering guidance and tools to support program directors in the postdoctoral dental education admissions environment. An initial survey of 714 advanced education program directors gathered information on current admissions practices and perceptions of existing and possible new factors in the process.

In this session representatives from the University of Michigan, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Howard University dental schools discussed their experience using ADEA’s ExploreHealthCareers.org as a tool for online mentoring. These three pilot projects from ADEA and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation shared the challenges and successes that accompany an online mentoring program. Marita R. Inglehart, Ph.D., from the University of Michigan, spoke about the successful collaboration of ExploreHealthCareers.org with a mentoring program for high school students in an area that lacks access to dental care.

This highly charged session distinguished itself on two fronts. It marked the first use of this format in an ADEA Presidential Symposium, and although no one took a precise headcount, it appeared to draw a larger crowd than any other session—plenaries included—with in the neighborhood of 1,000 members in attendance.
