Poor oral health care has been an issue in American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) communities for many years. The most recent study reported that the AI/AN population has the highest dental caries rate in the country. The problem is attributed to a number of factors, including a lack of access to providers who understand and are committed to working in AI/AN communities.

UMDNJ and Rutgers University Merge Creating New Health Sciences Institute

Leaders across New Jersey welcomed a new era in higher education July 1, 2013, as the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act became effective. The Act integrates most of the former University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey into Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, including University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, New Jersey Dental School (UMDNJ).

The dental school is now officially the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine. The school’s leadership recommended the new name to reflect that dentistry is a profession founded in biomedical science. The new name more closely aligns with today’s dental education and practice.

Dr. Rena N. D’Souza Named First Permanent Dean of New Dental School at University of Utah

An internationally regarded researcher and highly honored dental educator, Rena N. D’Souza, D.D.S., M.S., Ph.D., has been selected as the first permanent dean of the University of Utah’s new School of Dentistry. She assumes her new role on August 1, 2013.

Dr. D’Souza is Professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at Texas A&M University Baylor College of Dentistry (BCD) and served as its Chairperson from 2006 to 2012. In this period, she transformed the culture of research and scholarship within the college by developing initiatives that sustain the unique integrated research and learning environment that exists today.

ADEA MDFD Award to Fund Four Dental Hygiene Academic Community Partnerships

The W.K. Kellogg Foundation awarded a $400,000 grant to the ADEA Minority Dental Faculty Development program to enhance the formation of academic and community partnerships for dental health professionals, and ultimately reduce oral health disparities for vulnerable children and communities.

Mr. Hann, who will soon be graduating from the University of Southern California Ostrow School of Dentistry, appeared to be boasting, but in actuality, the frontrunner status to which he alluded is a dubious distinction. USC is the most expensive dental school in North America.
