For the first time the American Dental Education Association, generously supported by Sunstar Americas, Inc., a longstanding ADEA Corporate Member, has established the ADEA/Sunstar Americas, Inc. Student Legislative Internship, an opportunity for dental and allied dental students to gain experience in public policy formulation and advocacy on behalf of academic dentistry.

Over 300 dental students from across the United States descended on Washington, D.C., on March 28 and 29 for the 2011 National Dental Student Lobby Day co-sponsored by the American Student Dental Association (ASDA) and ADEA. The schedule was tightly packed with several informative topics, including a refresher on how exactly Congress works and why understanding advocacy is important within the realm of oral health care.

The ADEA Opening Plenary featured Frans Johansson, M.B.A., author of The Medici Effect: Breakthrough Insights at the Intersection of Ideas, Concepts and Culture. A founder of both a medical device company and a software company, Mr. Johansson explores how innovation happens when people look beyond their expertise and put resources together in new combinations. Mr. Johansson began his plenary session by posing the following question and answer to an audience of over 1,000 people: “How do we create groundbreaking ideas? By combining widely different ideas.”

Proceedings of the Fourth ADEA International Women’s Leadership Conference (IWLC): Global Health Through Women’s Leadership has been published as a supplement to the March 2011 Journal of Dental Education. This conference took place in Salvador, Brazil in September 2010 and was attended by women leaders from six continents.

This highly charged session distinguished itself on two fronts. It marked the first use of this format in an ADEA Presidential Symposium, and although no one took a precise headcount, it appeared to draw a larger crowd than any other session—plenaries included—with in the neighborhood of 1,000 members in attendance.

The idea of bringing New York University’s (NYU) nursing program into the College of Dentistry initially met with skepticism on both sides. In addition to the usual barriers to interprofessional education, NYU would have to overcome the fact that the Colleges of Dentistry and Nursing are more than a mile and a half apart, a significant distance given Manhattan traffic.
