ADA Seeking Faculty Volunteers for Developing Tanzanian Curriculum

The American Dental Association (ADA), in cooperation with Health Volunteers Overseas, is assisting dental faculty at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in developing programs to provide chair-side instruction and lectures to undergraduate and advanced dental education students, as well as continuing education for the faculty.

The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) is calling for nominations to fill vacancies for public members of its review committees. Public nominees should not have a formal or informal connection to dentistry, but they should have an interest in or knowledge of health-related accreditation issues.

Since 1999, more than 200 fellows from predoctoral, allied, and advanced dental education have participated in the ADEA Leadership Institute. Institute fellows hold positions ranging from department chairs to program directors to deans of dental schools. Throughout the year-long program, participants explore leadership styles, emotional intelligence, organizational theory, team building, stress management, work-life balance, strategies for leading change, and giving and receiving feedback.

The ADEAGies Foundation is accepting nominations through November 1, 2011 for the 2012 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement. The Gies Awards, named after dental education pioneer William J. Gies, Ph.D., recognize exceptional contributions to and support of oral health and dental education around the world.

Academic Dentistry Can’t Win If You Don’t Play

Many educators, administrators, and students in the dental education community have outstanding achievements or demonstrate exceptional commitment—they simply have not yet been recognized. How will that happen? As the saying goes, you can’t win if you don’t play. Academic dentistry as a whole won’t gain the broader benefits of your work if no one knows about it. So now is the time to nominate for recognition through ADEA’s programs. Self nominations are encouraged.

Advocacy: A Primer for Aspiring Student Leaders

Students looking for ways to make an impact on public policy don’t have to wait until after graduation.
