California Dental Pipeline Program II Evaluation Symposium: Outcomes and Implications

Most rural areas in California have shortages of dentists, and the state has many low-income urban communities with concentrations of racial and ethnic minorities. In response, the California Pipeline Program Phase II was implemented to reduce the disparities in access to oral health care in California. ADEA was then charged in 2007 with leading a three-year evaluation of these efforts and “bridging the gap” between California and national policy issues.

In this session representatives from the University of Michigan, University of Illinois at Chicago, and Howard University dental schools discussed their experience using ADEA’s ExploreHealthCareers.org as a tool for online mentoring. These three pilot projects from ADEA and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation shared the challenges and successes that accompany an online mentoring program. Marita R. Inglehart, Ph.D., from the University of Michigan, spoke about the successful collaboration of ExploreHealthCareers.org with a mentoring program for high school students in an area that lacks access to dental care.

The American Assoc. of Public Health Dentistry’s Panel Report of the Educational Plan for Two-Year Dental Therapist Programs

This dynamic session focused on the growing interest in adding a new oral health professional to the dental workforce and reported on the educational plan recommended by the American Association of Public Health Dentistry (AAPHD). The report of this panel will be released in April in the American Journal of Dental Public Health.

The ADEAGies Foundation is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2011 William J. Gies Awards for Vision, Innovation, and Achievement (Gies Awards). The Gies Awards will be presented on March 14, 2011, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in conjunction with the 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego, California.

Two Dugoni School of Dentistry IDS Students Honored with 2010 Dixon Scholarship Award

The University of Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry honored International Dental Studies (IDS) students Drs. Mohammad Faizan Ali and Kunal Karan with the 5th Annual Dr. F. Gene and Rosemary Dixon Scholarship Award during a ceremony held in early November. Ali and Karan, both members of the Class of 2011, were recognized for their exemplary work during their first year as IDS students. Each will receive a check for $3,000 during graduation.

Professor Strives to Improve Jordanian Dental Hygiene on Fulbright Grant

Prof. Michele L. Darby, Chair of the Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene at Old Dominion University, is spending much of the first half of 2010 as a Fulbright Scholar in Irbid, Jordan. In collaboration with Jordan University of Science and Technology, Professor Darby is teaching students and assisting faculty and administrators in achieving education standards similar to those in the United States.
