A First-Hand Look at Medicine and Dentistry in China

The delegation of 16 included U.S. and Canadian dental and allied dental educators, private practitioners and their guests, and representatives from the U.S. Veterans Affairs dental service and Office of the Surgeon General of the U.S. Army. While in China, the delegation visited dental schools in Beijing, Xian, and Kunming and learned about curriculum structure, integration of biomedical sciences, traditional Chinese medicine, and clinical sciences.

Over the past couple of years, ADEA has been at the forefront of efforts expected to result in a major change in dentistry and dental hygiene: the transition from a system of disparate state and regional testing for clinical licensure to a uniform national exam. Since dental and dental hygiene graduates must pass licensure exams before they can practice, this development has significant implications for schools and students, as well as the public the system is designed to protect.

CU School of Dentistry Receives $2 Million Grant to Benefit Colorado’s Underserved

The University of Colorado School of Dentistry was recently named the recipient of a three-year, $2 million grant to treat the teeth of Colorado’s underserved children. The grant, which creates a statewide program that will be known as Colorado SmileMakers, was made possible due to support from both the offices of Gov. Bill Owens and Lt. Gov. Jane Norton and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Finance.

On May 11, New York Governor George Pataki signed into law legislation that, beginning in 2007, will require dental students to complete a clinically based, CODA-approved postdoctoral general practice or specialty dental residency program of at least one year’s duration.
