ECU Receives Federal Grant for Telemedicine

East Carolina University (ECU) School of Dental Medicine has received a grant worth nearly $400,000 to expand its rural residency program. The grant comes as a portion of more than $1.5 million North Carolina is receiving from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to improve access to health care and educational services in rural communities.

Each summer, three rising senior dental hygiene students and a faculty member from the University of Maryland satellite campus in Princess Anne travel by boat to Smith Island on the Eastern Shore of Maryland to provide dental hygiene care to island residents. Smith Island's population decreases each year due to lack of employment and the slow decline of the crabbing industry.

Prof. Michele L. Darby, Chair of the Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene at Old Dominion University, is spending much of the first half of 2010 as a Fulbright Scholar in Irbid, Jordan. In collaboration with Jordan University of Science and Technology, Professor Darby is teaching students and assisting faculty and administrators in achieving education standards similar to those in the United States.
