The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) has integrated a counseling technique into its dental hygiene curriculum that has evidence of positively effecting behavioral changes.

CDHP and AAPD Partner on $1 Million Perinatal Oral Health Project

The Children’s Dental Health Project (CDHP) will administer a $1 million grant received by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) to improve the oral health of pregnant women and young children, including those in Early Head Start, WID, and other maternal and child health populations. The grant, “Improving Perinatal Oral Health,” was awarded to the AAPD by the federal Maternal and Child Health Bureau through its Partnership to Promote Maternal and Child Health program.

This year’s theme for the meeting focused on change in allied dental education. Dr. Marc Frankel and Ms. Judith Schectman facilitated an all-day workshop that addressed changes facing professionals in academic health disciplines identified from a preconference survey and industry trends. Directors were able to determine their individual style during times of change and were able to apply this information to a case study in team dynamics and leadership.

Tobacco Cessation Programs in Allied Dental Education

Despite research and public information campaigns citing the dangers, tobacco use remains a significant problem in the United States. Though tobacco use has seen a decline in recent years, as many as 6,000 people begin using these products daily, many of them adolescents. Of current tobacco users, many continue to do so despite failing health or a desire to quit.
