 ADEA Leadership Institute

The ADEA Leadership Institute is a year-long program designed to develop the nation’s most promising individuals at academic dental institutions to become future leaders in dental and higher education.

More than 150 faculty and administrators from predoctoral, allied, and postdoctoral dental education have participated in the ADEA Leadership Institute since 2000. Leadership Institute fellows hold positions ranging from department chairs to program directors to deans of dental schools. They have in common their interest in their development as professionals in dental and higher education as well as aspirations for greater leadership at their institutions.

Prof. Rebecca Wilder, Associate Professor, Director of Graduate Dental Hygiene Education, and Director of Faculty Development, University of North Carolina School of Dentistry; ADEA Leadership Institute Fellow, Class of 2008
“The ADEA Leadership Institute was extremely valuable to me as an academician. It provided a very broad perspective of the issues facing dental and higher education that are important for any leader to understand. It also provided a platform for introspective analysis as well as peer assessment—all of which are vital to personal and professional growth. The camaraderie with other dental and dental hygiene academicians from institutions all over the country was beneficial in that it helped me obtain a perspective about my own institution that I might not have realized otherwise.  It also provided a global view of the challenges and opportunities we have before us in dental education. Lastly, the Institute instills a confidence in the participant to plan and implement his or her own career path. I highly recommend the Institute for anyone who is passionate about dental or dental hygiene education and who wants to develop the skills and expertise to lead and implement change in an effective manner.”
