About ADEA’s Division of Knowledge Management (DKM)
The division’s primary responsibilities include gathering, organizing, and delivering the rich content that is generated through both ADEA staff and its members. By archiving articles, monographs, white papers, presentations, and other intellectual property about dental, allied dental, and advanced dental education, ADEA manages a storehouse of information, which contributes to the advancement of issues influencing education, research, and the delivery of oral health care.
Dissemination of this content is equally important, and the division provides primary support for gathering and indexing the material so that it is easily accessible. DKM staff help determine appropriate mediums for capturing and disseminating content, such as video, web pages, compendiums, and publications.
Activities
MedEdPORTAL
The American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) formed a partnership in 2008 to foster interdisciplinary education and expand MedEdPORTAL's medical education collection to include dental education resources. DKM oversees the dental education submission and review process, marketing MedEdPORTAL, and analyzing its use and impact.
MedEdPORTAL is a free online international publication venue where educators in the health professions may publish and share educational resources. Published resources are available to educators, administrators, students, and the general public around the globe.
Users can:
Access high quality, peer-reviewed teaching materials - at no cost
Expand the breadth and depth of your teaching resources
Receive ready-to-use teaching tools to save time and budgets Revitalize your lesson plans
Receive recognition for your work
Publish in a prestigious venue
Give your scholarship worldwide exposure
ADEA Online Library
The purpose of ADEA’s Online Library is to connect all of our knowledge assets in a meaningful way, and in one place. Reports, summaries, charts, tables, graphs, and other sources for data and information that members, staff and the public need are housed in an online repository. It contains information and data from the past and present, and highlights items of significance. In many cases, users can drill down to find more information and actual data sources.
The ADEA Online Library continues to expand its content and resources. Many resources have been added and existing content has been updated:
- MedEdPORTAL Tools for Advocates, MedEdPORTAL Resources for Educators, MedEdPORTAL Showcase photos from the 2011 ADEA Annual Session;
- Social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter;
- The 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition Opening Video, and many educational presentations from the 2011 ADEA Annual Session;
- ADEA survey data that have been recently published as well as a list of ADEA surveys that are still in the field;
The page for Students now has more information for prospective and current dental students. Collaboration between the ADEA Division of Educational Pathways and DKM continues as information is exchanged and posted by both divisions.
Explore Health Careers
ExploreHealthCareers.org is a free, multidisciplinary, interactive health careers website designed to address workforce shortages in the health professions. Its mission is to help solve two urgent problems in American health care: the underrepresentation of minorities in the workforce and the lack of health professionals in medically underserved communities. ExploreHealthCareers.org addresses these problems by helping more of today's students become the health professionals of tomorrow. The site gives students a free, reliable, and comprehensive source of accurate, up-to-date information about the health professions. This includes information on and links to health-related education/training programs, financial aid resources, specialized learning opportunities, and current issues in health care.
ADEA/W.K. Kellogg Dental Student Outreach Program (DSOP)
In collaboration with ADEA’s Dental Student Outreach Program (DSOP) funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, EHC continues to expand the newly created social networking site that provides information about dental careers, oral health, and wellness in an educational and interactive way. The purpose of the website is to educate and inform kids about healthy eating, diet, and exercise. Several policies were created to inform the user and participants about how private information would be shared, the terms of use, and what constitutes appropriate and inappropriate behavior for the social networking components on the site. ADEA obtained legal counsel to ensure that a safe, social networking environment was created for users over the age of 13 in compliance with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). The requirements of COPPA are outlined in EHC’s Privacy Policy. The Acceptable Use Policy specifically addresses inappropriate and appropriate behaviors on the site and the Terms of Use was updated on EHC and the DSOP sites to reflect new changes on both sites. The website was rolled out at the 2011 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition in San Diego. A live demonstration was given to workshop attendees highlighting the interactive features on the site. Principal investigators from two of the pilot sites – University of Michigan and University of Illinois Chicago -- shared lessons learned and challenges faced with implementing academic-community partnerships to improve the lives of vulnerable children who lack access to dental care at three pilot sites. A presentation on the DSOP site was also given to the ADEA Council of Faculties to encourage use of the DSOP site by all dental schools.
ADEA Trends in Dental Education
The regular update of Trends in Dental Education is overseen by this division. DKM staff, along with members of several other ADEA divisions, update information related to trends in dental education and locate and analyze new data documenting current trends. The data is collected and presented in a variety of formats, including PowerPoint slides, CD-ROM, HTML, and print.
Council Toolkits
Several of ADEA's councils have online toolkits to assist volunteer leaders in performing their duties. Each toolkit contains information about the council that can be shared with colleagues at Member Institutions; publications related to ADEA's governance; information about awards, scholarships, and fellowships; how to apply for ADEA project pool funding; links to key resources such as Trends in Dental Education; compendiums; and much more.
DKM assists other ADEA divisions in developing and delivering programs and products and managing their knowledge assets. DKM is also involved in delivering ADEA Annual Session content, developing policies and guidelines for the ADEA website, and other publications and activities.
