New to the ADEA Annual Session?

First, there’s a session on Saturday designed just for you!

During Find Your Tribe (taking place Saturday, March 17 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.), you’ll be introduced to veteran attendees and fellow first-timers, learn more about the format of Annual Session, and learn ideas, strategies and short-cuts to enhance your experience of the 2018 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. Lunch will be provided, so you must register before March 9 to secure your spot.

Here are some tips that will help you to make the most of your time in Orlando:

THE BASICS

  • Wear your nametag to meetings, social events, but not on the street. Bring business cards with you. Carry snacks and drinks.
  • Use the maps in the conference program or mobile app to locate conference hotels and to navigate the convention center and exhibit floor.
  • Meet people. Avoid listening to music, texting, etc., when you could be networking.
  • Note that it’s normal to arrive late or to leave early from events, except for the plenaries.

NETWORK AND GET INVOLVED

  • You are not alone. Ask questions and learn from the thousands of dental educators and related professionals from myriad backgrounds attending the conference with you. These individuals may face the same challenges as you or have developed solutions you need, they may have a similar position as you or one that you want, or they may be a potential collaborator or mentor.
  • Talk to people. Introduce yourself and exchange business cards or contact information.
  • If you want to get involved in the Association, a specific division, round table, and or committee or section, attend meetings and introduce yourself to the chairperson, director, etc.

STAY CONNECTED, APPLY AND SHARE THE WEALTH

  • Keep your newfound connections! Make a note on the back of business cards you receive to trigger your memory of the exchange. Send follow-up email messages to the contacts and presenters you meet.
  • Apply your experiences. Take time to review the notes and materials you collect and to plan how you can use the information in your position as a dental educator.
  • Share and discuss the new ideas you learned with your colleagues who weren’t able to attend. Reacquaint yourself and reflect on why you are where you are, and what makes you glad to be a part of the dental education community!

You may have noticed that some of the sessions in the program planner are designated as “SOTL.” SoTL stands for “Scholarship of Teaching and Learning”—the examination of how teaching is valued, assessed and rewarded, and how it contributes overall to the learning experience of students and educators.

You can earn an ADEA SoTLfest certificate during the 2018 ADEA Annual Session by:

  1. Attending three sessions with this designation.
  2. Attending at least one Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors Symposium.
  3. Completing the online evaluation process associated with those sessions, using the mobile app or online program planner.

The deadline to complete the evaluations and print a PDF of your ADEA SoTLfest Certificate is April 30, 2018..

At any point during the year, you can join a Section or Special Interest Group online. Doing so automatically opts you into the corresponding listserv, giving you access to 85 – 1,000 fellow ADEA members who share your professional interests.

In Orlando, you can learn more about a Section or Special Interest Group (and meet some of the people in it) by going to its members’ forum. You can find Section and SIG members’ forums taking place at Annual Session by searching the program planner for “members’ forum.”

Short Talks sessions feature 10 to 15 presenters speaking for five minutes each on a particular educational theme. These popular sessions spark conversation beyond the Annual Session and motivate the development of teaching innovations. This year’s Short Talks are:
