Welcome to the 2017 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition

This is the first issue of the Session Daily for the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. The Session Daily is your one-stop source for program highlights, special events and general news about the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. Watch your inbox for a new issue of the Session Daily tomorrow, Monday and Tuesday mornings.

Over the next four days, ADEA is offering a variety of informative and interactive educational sessions and workshops, and engaging plenary sessions. There are three Chair of the ADEA Board of Directors symposia—one on Sunday morning , one on Monday morning and one on Monday afternoon. The Monday afternoon symposium features several leading-edge ideas to be shared in a fast-paced session based on TED Talks. Additionally, you will have ample opportunity to network and socialize with peers and colleagues, including at events such as the Welcome Reception today from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. in the Promenade Plaza. There’s so much to do and see, and we encourage you to use the 2017 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition mobile app and the online program planner to navigate the meeting.

New this year is the inaugural event of the “In the Mix” Series on Sunday, which honors a rich history of more than 20 years of Discourse & Dessert events at the ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition (this event is ticketed; check at the registration booth for availability). The “In the Mix” Series continues the legacy of important conversations around issues of diversity, inclusion and gender. Anne L. Koch, D.M.D., will set the stage by highlighting the barriers transgender individuals face to receiving quality medical care.

The Exhibit Hall is open on Sunday and Monday. Visit with more than 65 exhibitors and explore the ADEA TechExpo and poster presentations by faculty and students. We have limited programming during Exhibit Hall hours so you can take advantage of enhanced offerings in the Exhibit Hall and the scheduled networking opportunities, including the Connect & Collaborate Lounge, a coffee break and lunches for attendees.

Stop by the ADEA Showcase (booth #302) during Exhibit Hall hours and learn more about ADEA publications and membership, ADEA application services, ADEA weTeach® and the ADEAGies Foundation. Get a free professional head shot on Monday from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Come during JDE Office Hours (Sunday and Monday from noon to 2:00 p.m.) and learn about getting published in the Journal of Dental Education.

The Annual Session & Exhibition will end with the closing of the ADEA House of Delegates at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 21.

Again, welcome, and enjoy your time here in Long Beach!

ADEA Takes Over the Long Beach Waterfront

This week Long Beach, CA, is overflowing with ADEA members attending the 2017 ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition. We have filled three conference hotels, three overflow hotels, and several additional hotels. Whether you are arriving early, staying late or wondering what to do during your downtime at this year’s ADEA Annual Session & Exhibition, be sure to explore Long Beach, CA. One thing is certain—you are sure to bump into other ADEA members!

Known as The Urban Waterfront PlaygroundTM, Long Beach is a scenic, active, sunny city in the center of southern California. Voted one of America’s most walkable cities, it is comprised of eight distinct neighborhoods. The area that is now Long Beach started as a ranching community as part of a massive Spanish land grant to soldier Manual Nieto in the late 18th century. Almost 100 years later, the city started taking form along the coast, and its first hotel, the Long Beach Hotel, opened in 1880.

Long Beach also has a rich nautical history. It served as a Navy town for years, and many of the ships bombed at Pearl Harbor in 1941 had been stationed in Long Beach. In 1967, it became the permanent home of the ocean liner Queen Mary. And, the Port of Long Beach is the second busiest container port in the United States, after the Port of Los Angeles.

Long Beach has had many other noteworthy historical events. The first and only flight of Howard Hughes’ Spruce Goose, the world’s largest airplane, took off over Long Beach Harbor in 1947. Long Beach has hosted the Long Beach Grand Prix since 1975; served as the site for four events during the 1984 Olympics—yachting, volleyball, fencing and archery; and was the site of the TED Conference (of TED Talks fame) for five years, from 2009 to 2013.

Beautiful weather and a central location make this spot ideal for daily excursions, fun and unique shopping trips, delectable lunches and soaking in the sun. Whether you have time for one or all, be sure to take advantage of the many local attractions during your stay. Here’s a list to get you started:

We hope you enjoy the many exciting options Long Beach has to offer during your stay!
