Session and Special Event Descriptions

Seminars
Seminar programs address a critical issue or topic that is of immediate relevance and importance to dental education. Participants receive a broad overview and focus on relevant points and often include a look at solutions, techniques, or models that are innovative or based on current practices. In a 90 minute seminar, at least a quarter of the program is dedicated to a Q&A session with the audience. Length: 60 or 90 minutes

Workshops – Including Faculty Development Workshops
Workshops are designed to provide an experiential and interactive learning opportunity for participants, guided by no more than three leaders. Participants are encouraged to collaborate to solve an introduced problem or question as the speaker(s) guide the discussion. A portion of the program is dedicated to a summary/wrap-up. Length: 60 or 90 minutes. These workshops include the popular Faculty Development Workshops, which are geared towards new and mid-career faculty to aid them in developing effective instructional skills.

Small Group Discussions
These loosely structured and informative discussions center on a single specific and timely topic, question, or issue facing dental education today. The session is held in a less traditional educational setting to help create a comfortable environment that encourages all participants to freely discuss their ideas, ask questions, and contribute. Length: 45 minutes

ADEA Council, Section, and Special Interest Group Programs
A program presented by an ADEA disciplinary or interest group related to current trends in dental education and the area of discipline. These sessions are typically cross-disciplinary and appeal to all. Length: 45, 60, or 90 minutes

ADEA TechExpo Presentations
An ADEA TechExpo Presentation demonstrates computer-based technology applications used to support dental education, including enhancing educational and patient care programs and services. The ADEA TechExpo consists of tabletop demonstrations or presentations. This format is best suited for demonstration of software and hardware in an interactive one-on-one or small group setting. Length: 3 hours

Discourse & Dessert: An Evening Plenary on Gender Issues
This session brings together ADEA members and guests in an informal environment for a discussion on gender issues, and it provides an opportunity for networking. The guest speakers are people of achievement and power who contribute to the wellbeing of the communities they serve. The potential of women and men in the world order is enhanced by exposure to ideas and role models that use “big picture” strategies to affect all of mankind, especially the careers of women and minorities. Length: 2 hours

Members' Forum
The Members’ Forum is annual gathering of an ADEA Section or Special Interest Group, during which new officers are elected, results of the group's activities for the past year are discussed, and general business and future planning takes place. All members, prospective members, and other interested individuals are invited to attend these meetings. Length: TBD.

Poster Presentations and Student Poster Presentations
Presented during exhibition hours, Poster Presentations provide members the opportunity to discuss issues of mutual interest in three categories:

  1. New Programs
  2. Educational Research
  3. Works in Progress

A poster author may be the primary author of, at most, two poster abstracts. A special competition is also held for Student Poster Presentations. All poster abstracts, except for Works in Progress, will be published in the Journal of Dental Education.

Presidential Symposium
A complete description will be available at a later date.

Participants can be recognized for their participation in this track. To be eligible for an ADEA SoTLfest Certificate of Recognition, attendees must register in advance and attend the required ADEA Presidential Symposium, Using Faculty Assessment to Foster the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and three other SoTLfest-designated/endorsed events.
